The Ottawa Integrative Cancer Centre is opening soon!

The Ottawa Integrative Cancer Centre (OICC) is set to open its doors to cancer patients on November 1, 2011.  It will be located at 29 Bayswater Avenue and their contact number is 613-792-1222.

I wanted to mention the OICC on my blog because I feel this is a great step forward in providing integrative care to patients.  On a personal note, with my partner being in medical school, many have questioned whether we have arguments over what type of medical care is better: alternative or conventional?

Our answer, and the reason we are able to agree with each other on the issue, is that ultimately patients have a choice over what type of care they wish to utilize.  If patients are educated about the benefits and drawbacks of both alternative and conventional medical treatment for their particular health condition, they are able to make informed choices about the type of healthcare they would like to receive.

Alternative and conventional treatments can be used separately or together, depending on the situation and patient’s preference. My hope is that the OICC will be the first of many model clinics where patients can receive education and access to both alternative and conventional medical care.

The OICC will offer:

  • scientifically grounded, evidence-informed natural cancer care, to strengthen the body’s ability to heal itself and to sustain wellness during aggressive cancer therapies
  • open communication and collaboration with allied health professionals and conventional oncologists
  • evidence-based therapies at doses and times that will not negatively impact on conventional therapy but support the body’s own inherent healing ability and help patients cope with therapy associated toxicity and side effects
  • research that evaluates the effectiveness of the therapies provided

The above information was taken from the OICC website.  I encourage you to visit their website to learn more, and also share this information with your friends through the OICC facebook page.

  1. That sounds great Ellen! I like when new facilities open up with integrative care. Hope things in Ottawa are suiting you well!

    • Ottawa is great! I hope your weight loss program is gaining momentum. Did you guys hire a new naturopath yet?

      • No naturopath yet, the weight loss program is going well, though I haven’t been promoting it too much. Been so busy with other stuff (non-nutrition related) so I’ve left my admin position to sort out my life a little. Are you sure we can’t persuade you back? 🙂
